Between the Lines of Leadership · A Headhunter's Picks (11)

This week I want to kick off a new section in our newsletter, one dedicated to sharing the YouTube channels (and other platforms) I turn to for personal and professional growth. And there's no better place to start than BBVA's "Aprendemos Juntos". (https://www.youtube.com/@AprendemosJuntos).

There are tons of episodes worth your time. Honestly, if you get the chance to dig into all of them, you'll find a bottomless source of learning. But to stay consistent with our recurring focus on self-knowledge, a theme that's already shown up in several past editions of the newsletter, I want to single out these three episodes in particular. I think they'll round out the conversations we've had so far perfectly.

Willpower, that great unknown. Mago More

The key takeaways from this great talk:

  1. Setting Clear Goals: The importance of having clear, achievable goals. Mago More stresses defining specific objectives that guide our actions and keep us motivated to stay the course.
  1. Discipline and Routine: Discipline is essential to build and sustain willpower. Setting up a daily routine helps turn actions into habits, which makes hitting our goals a lot easier without leaning so hard on willpower.
  1. Time Management: Managing your time well is key to being more productive. Prioritizing tasks and cutting out distractions are strategies Mago More suggests to make the most of your time and energy.
  1. Growth Mindset: Adopting a growth mindset, where challenges are seen as chances to learn and get better. More touches on how the way we perceive our own abilities shapes our willpower, and on the importance of keeping a positive attitude in the face of obstacles.
  1. The Power of Habits: Building positive habits and how they can ease the load willpower puts on us. More gets into how small, consistent actions can lead to big changes in our lives.

Beyond the talk, I'd also recommend his book, which runs along the same lines but goes deeper into the power of habits. Here's his formula for becoming an X-MEN 😉

The value of your attitude. Victor Kuppers

Another great classic the channel features. Here are the key takeaways:

  1. The Formula for Personal Value: Kuppers often brings up a simple but powerful formula to gauge a person's value: V = (K + S) x A, where V is Value, K is knowledge, S is skills and A is attitude. The formula drives home that attitude doesn't just add to a person's value, it multiplies it.
  1. The Importance of Attitude: Attitude stands out as the single most critical factor, the one that can change everything. A positive attitude can shift how others see us and how we tackle the challenges we face day to day.
  1. The Lightbulb Effect: Kuppers uses the metaphor of the "lightbulb effect" to describe how people with a positive attitude shine, and how that lights up everyone around them too.
  1. Living with Enthusiasm: Kuppers stresses how important it is to live with enthusiasm, passion and joy. For him, those are the essential ingredients of a full, satisfying life.
  1. Attitude in the Face of Adversity: Another key point is how our attitude shapes our ability to face and overcome adversity. Kuppers advises holding on to a positive attitude even in the toughest moments, which can make a huge difference in the outcomes.

The neuroscience of emotions. Marian Rojas-Estape

This last talk is brilliant for asking ourselves the right questions and getting to know ourselves better. Here are the key takeaways:

  1. How the Brain and Emotions Work: Rojas-Estape underscores how important it is to understand how our brain works and how emotions are biochemical processes that shape our thinking, behavior and well-being. Grasping that can help us live more consciously and handle our emotions and stress in a healthier way.
  1. The Importance of Emotional Intelligence: She highlights self-knowledge and emotional self-regulation as key to building solid emotional intelligence, offering strategies like deep breathing, meditation and physical exercise as ways to manage our emotions.
  1. Practicing Gratitude: Rojas-Estape points to gratitude as a powerful practice for lifting our mood and emotional well-being. Gratitude doesn't just help us focus on the positive, it brings tangible benefits too, like less stress, better sleep quality and a higher level of happiness.
  1. Physical Exercise and Emotions: She highlights the positive impact regular exercise has on our emotions. Exercise doesn't just trigger the release of endorphins and serotonin, the neurotransmitters tied to feelings of well-being and happiness, it also supports neurogenesis, improving our capacity to manage emotions.
  1. Meditation and Mindfulness: Finally, the talk spotlights meditation and mindfulness as effective tools for managing emotions. These practices let us observe and accept our emotions without judgment, helping us build greater awareness and emotional regulation.
